There are still plenty of places where nothing is generic. A couple of
months ago I was in Stowe, Vermont, where the main streets are lined
with lots of unique family restaurants. They told me that a McDonald's
had opened last year, and closed in a few months for lack of interest.
Obviously, it's a tourist spot, and no tourist is going to go on a long
trip to eat what they get at home.
Here in New York there are lots of McDonald's, but also lots of
Vietnamese, Afghan, and authentic Chinese restaurants (in addition to
the numerous generic ones). That's because this city has tourists, but
also a local population that sometimes needs fast food. In general, you
