For a lovely variation on this trick, there is a theatrical lighting
manufacturer who sells a system capable of running two independently
controlled loads via one power cable). Not sold in europe, and seems
to me to be a nasty hack, but it is done by using 70 volt bulbs, with
the 'dimmer doubler' containing a pair of large diodes! The rack
control software controls the phase angle of the positive and negitive
half of the waveform independently.
I do not need to point out what happens when some twat plugs a
transformer driven load into the output side of a dimmer doubler do I....
These things must do wonders for the upstream power transformers as they
are probably not really designed to handle loads with large DC components.
