Actually, it is a reasonable question but players are so cheap that you
might as well buy one. Heck, the price of DVD players is in the noise
level ($60 US new and refurbs for less than $50) and they mostly play
CDs. The group I am in is doing currently what the OP wants to do but we
have an ATA bus analyzer so we capture what a player with an IDE does
and do a major "monkey see, monkey do." We did DVD first because
customers wanted to see a movie. We were unable to get the "Keystone
Cops" on DVD and settled for "Police Academy" as fitting.
His schematic showed only half of the ATA data lines connected. Is it
possible to do ATAPI with only 8 bits of the ATA? I don't know. We use
all 16 data lines. The ATAPI commands for just playing the music are
simpler than for DVD playing a movie. Still, there is quite a bit of
initial bus traffic (some of that has to do with deciding whether we are
a DVD or a CD - I think the guys just canned the responses to get by
I think the OP needs to look at CD play software to see how it is done.
There are open source players for Linux he can look at. He might have to
look at the driver software as well to see how the ATAPI traffic is
handled. And I still wonder about using the lower 8 bits only for ATAPI.
