|Thanks for the responses. Since my post I've learned a lot more about
|bugbear and its aliases, and must say it sounds pretty nasty.
|Some good questions here from John. Maybe I have been less concerned
|than I should have been. But I do have NAV (as part of Norton
|SystemWorks 2002) and its automatic e-mail scanning is enabled.
|However, even before this apparent evidence of infection, I'm not
|convinced it's working properly.
|Do you have it? Shouldn't there be a tray icon flashing during
|incoming e-mail sessions? I vaguely recall that happened in the days
|immediately after installation, although I may be confusing it with
|the full 'auto-protect' icon.
|Live Update has not been doing what I expected from it. It's enabled,
|and I'd assumed that I would get automatic notifications when there
|was anything new available, including virus definitions. Apparently
|not. When I manually went to LU this morning, there *were* updates
|(including presumably the bugbear stuff) and I duly installed them. So
|it now looks as if I don't get notified when there are updates. Is
|that correct, or is there a setting somewhere that will *automate*
|this check at a frequency of my choosing? If not, what do other LU
|users do? Perhaps run it via Task Scheduler?
|As for NAV itself, I don't currently have that on the recommended
|auto-scan, as I've never really trusted virus scanners running
|permanently in the background.
|I'd be interested to hear how other NAV users are configured.

I have NAV 2002, with everything turned on, Auto Protect, Incoming
E-mail, Script Blocking and Automatic Live Update and Scheduled Scans.
Live Update is different than it used to be... it's no longer
"scheduled"... it seems somewhat random... I'll be sitting here
working and it will pop up and announce that it just did a live
(You have to be registered to get live updates, and there's an annual
subscription fee, IIRC ~US$ 3.50)
I'm also sitting behind an SMC Barricade firewall/router with NO ports
