I was thinking of a device that would extract a short loop of tape from the
cassette and run it past a pad or something (much the same way the tape is run
past the recording drum). Perhaps make the pad a strip wrapped around a drum
that turns very slowly so as to constantly expose fresh cleaning surface to
the tape. Both sides of the tape would need to be cleaned though. I could
get some of the parts I need from a video rewinder.
