Here is another suggestion.
Have a look at the Atmel AVR line of chips (www.atmel.com). They have a wide
range of microcontrollers with alot of variations (i.e. on board analog/digital
converters, real time clock, USB, etc.) and are pretty cheap ($5 to maybe $20
depending on the extras).
If you don't know assembly language (like me!), you can get a free compiler
that allows you to write the programs in "English" called BASCOM-AVR at
www.mcselec.com. There you can download a free demo of the software, or buy
the registered version for a whopping $60 or so. The difference between the
demo and the registered software is the size of code you can generate and the
frequency of software updates. Both the demo and the registered software comes
with a ton of example programs you can learn from. The support of the software
is simply amazing, to my mind. Also, there is an e-mail list you can join that
you can post questions to and have answered.
