I know very little about electronics design and manufacture, so please
forgive me if this sounds a little trite.
I would like to construct an input device for a computer which
determines the coordinate of a point in space. I intend to start by
having a control point and a device which outputs a voltage depending on
how close/far away that point is. Then I will read that voltage into
the computer to get a value of distance. In the unlikely even that I
get such a device working I would create four of them to run in parallel
and triangulate the position of the point based on the distances. I
want to make this as primitive as possible as it is only for my personal
enjoyment (and I don't have any commercial funding or anything).
If someone could make suggestions about what sort of components (for
instance, do I use a radio signal? Infra-red?) to use and what a good
source of information on these topics is I would appreciate it. As I
said, I do not have much experience in electronics (apart from a summer
job soldering robotics parts) but I am a university student (no, this is
not my major) with a functional mind, so I believe I have the resources
to accomplish this.
