I believe the last portion of the responses. Hobbyists, etc may miss
something or use bad assumptions, but a dedicated, educated, group working
on Spice can exist, do a very good job of fine tuning SPICE and they don't
have to be a bunch of liberal nerds from Beserkley to do a good job.
Inside of one of the Fortune 500 companies is a dedicated group of PhD's
and highly experienced design engineers working full time on the Spice
solver for their IC design teams. I have personally used this version of
Spice, which also contains Harmonic Balance solvers, and can atest to the
fact that it is accurate and usaully can converge on the correct solution
even when the designer is doing something stupid. It will even point out
where the IC designer is screwing up! It is really unfortunate that this
company does not offer the product to the rest of the world, but they
can't support it adequately for such a large population and the advantages
of the tool assist the designers internally with defeating their external
