It's not perversity but lack of knowledge that has held us back from
exploiting 'renewable' energy sources. A cynic might say, 'If God had
intended us to use renewable energy sources, he wouldn't have made it
100 times as difficult as using non-renewable sources'. OTOH, a pious
person might say, 'The provision by God of fossil fuels, easily
exploitable by primitive men, is an example of the Argument from Design.
We needed them to be able to advance our technology to the point where
we can abandon them, just before they run out, in favour of renewable
