Geez... I thought the way my company does it is dumb: First digit IDs
facility, next two digits are year, next two are week, two more to identify
model and last four are serial number. Or, auto VINs that ID country of
origin, make, model, and year of manufacture... plus 4 digit serial number
(if I ever sell more than 9999 units in a week I worry about it in the
Bahamas). I guess the random number thing works, but it is cool to be able
to tell a frustrated customer all about the product he's calling about...
even if the computer is "down" or you get blind sided at a trade show. And,
just looking at the week and year tells me if its in warranty or if I can
still offer to refund the purchase price.
