I am about to graduate soon and I am thinking about a VLSI design job and
many of my colleagues also want design jobs. Myself I am not sure on that
since I dont see the field so attractive:
1)there is lot of pressure -you often run into problems and bugs hard to
solve while struggling to keep the deadlines; I had a chance to talk to talk
to a Pro with 15 years of experience he says he is fed up with tough work
and sometimes bored
2)teamwork can be stressful (big egoes, someone to blame when things go
wrong, hard to get noticed..)
3)Slim chance for excellent salaries if you are not a top 3% candidate- to
make it to management you probably need a PhD;Also I wonder if marketing or
sales jobs generally pay better?
I feel if I get into design I should work on smth that is suitable for
technical support or sales for example design of electronics for
instrumentation equipment or Power sources design
Any comments especially from the design veterans who could point the traits
an engineer needs to be good in design, highly appreciated
