Again, the arguements about the right hand being free for defensive
reasons (in countries with wrong-side drive) is rather specious. It
is MUCH MUCH more useful to have the right hand free for various
other activities (assuming the traditional right-handedness.)
This is NOT an issue of being able to COPE with driving on the
wrong side (which I did very nicely in the UK, it was easy to
adapt), or being able to COPE with holding a drink, COPE with
changing a radio station, or COPE with controlling an unruly child.
It is just that the right hand/arm being available inside the car
is MUCH MUCH more handy than having to use the non-dominant
It is SIMPLY more useful to have the arm/hand with more skills
and fine control be available while driving (not just hanging out
the window.) In the old days,
where you had to hold your defensive/offensive device with
your more skillful hand, then the UK approach made some sense.
Perhaps the strongest argument for the UK side driving is for
driving through fast food establishments, but even then, the
left handed manipulation is rather minor, and there are more
issues of deploying the various food items and drinks (which
would best be done by the right hand) into the car.
