That would be great, but the parallel port can get initialized in any
number of random states. The bits tend to toggle randomly as the system
boots. This may result in the monitor flashing on and off (or even just
staying on) during the boot process, only to turn off once the OS is
already mostly loaded. Using a specific bit pattern greatly reduces the
chances of accidental turn-on.
