for a few things that may help:
SEEBITS.EXE is a fullscreen program that shows you the state of
8 input bits and lets you toggle the 8 output bits. Just
helpful to test stuff pre-software control.
The "C" and Pascal routines that 'fix up' pins 10 thru 17 as
8 input bits might be helpful for input stuff.
I would strongly suggest you get a typical push-in breadboard
and set up and test out your designs before you go to a PCB!
