Correct, easy means to extinguish a magnesium fire is to pour a fair amount
of dry sand on top of it. This is what we used in the tool shops. I have
seem magnesium burn so hot that it will actually burn through a concrete
floor. But the preferred method is to have the proper fire fighting
equipment on hand. Fun thing?/ is to actually have the equipment to weld
magnesium, similar to doing the same with aluminum. Covering the area of
work with an inert gas, such as helium, and actually arc-welding the
materials.
