Cell phones may not be the best example of a "future-proof" product.
The software upgrades will fix bugs within the design parameters of
the phone but can do little to support new carrier technology and
nothing to match improvents in style, size, weight and power
consumption. To be fair you did not suggest were a potential
"future-proof" consummer product but they represent a very widely
used consummer product that has typical development over time
characteristics found in many consummer products.
