We go to all the trouble of replacing unreliable incandescents with LEDs,
and instead we get unreliable chips to drive the LEDs. Oh, well..

You might consider using a constant current chip instead of the constant
voltage ones that you've been using.
So far, the Luxeons thast I've built have all been powered by 3 AA cells
and IMHO that's better than two AA cells because it lasts longer. Also
four AA rechargeables work really well.
