Was it in Sagan's "Contact"? There was a millionaire who allegedly got rich
by making this black box to remove tv ads?
Another idea: Isn't there a special signal, sent by TV transmitter, that tells the
VCR when to stop recording (is it called VPS?) so that all you record is just
the show/movie and not the ads? There was some contraversy when this was
introduced, some feared people would use it to avoid ads and consequently
TV houses would remove the signal. I don't know what was the outcome.
