UV is effective against live bacteria and algae, which is what you were
looking for. The spores are one to two orders of magnitude more
A study done at the University of Arizona shows the spore coat provides
protection against UV, and the spores can repair DNA damage from UV
light. The study was done on bacterial spores, but mold and fungus spores
have the same protection mechanisms:
Even if enough UV is available to kill the spores, dead spores still
contain toxic material that can make humans very ill.
After years of trial and error, I think I have finally stumbled on a
solution. Canadian Tire has a sale on centrifugal ventilation fans. I
installed one in the kitchen to suck the air out of the heating register
and vent it outside. For the first time in six months, I can go into
the kitchen and make a sandwich without getting such a splitting headache
that it sends me to bed.
I went back and got two more fans, one for the bedroom and one for the
lab. Maybe salvation is at hand!
You guys don't know how lucky you are to not have to deal with this kind
of problem. After having gone through it, I sincerely hope you never have
