PIC and AVR are almost completely interchangeable. The AVR is slightly
cheaper and faster, though. You can get a *free* C compiler for the AVR
(although the PIC C compilers aren't really expensive). For most
applications, there's really not much of a difference unless you're pushing
the envelope. For a production run of only 100 pieces you can pick either
one if you're using C. Make sure you make your design suitable for
in-circuit programming. That saves a hell of a lot of time.
