I admire the handling of this kind of thing by the Brits- the one I'm
familiar with is "Gweilo", a fairly derogatory term used by Chinese to
refer to Caucasians (it means foreign ghost or something of that
ilk). By coopting the term in HK and openly calling themselves Gweilos
in a jocular fashion (and not particularly caring if anyone else did),
the word was completely stripped of any power it had.
But, not taking offence is only half of the equation- and it is not so
much defense/defence of the bleedin' Limeys (who can generally take
care of themselves fairly well) as it is applying consistent rules of
conduct. Next time it could be people with funny-sounding names. ;-)
