Problem is, it isn't always a pejorative term (depends on the context). It
can be, and sometimes is, used similarly to "geek" or "nerd". For
instance, someone who likes country western music, working on cars, driving
pickup trucks, and drinking longneck Buds might well describe themselves as
a redneck, but without the racist, unintelligent overtones.
Still, the most common usage does imply insult.
