The push buttons need to be SPDT. The motor then connects in series between
the poles of the of two push buttons. The battery then feeds the the two
throws of both push buttons in parallel. As a side note, activating both
buttons simultaneously will NOT run the motor. Do not criss-cross the
battery feed from one push button to the other or the motor will run
constantly, stopping only if you press one of the buttons, or reversing if
you press both.
In house wiring you see a similar circuit that is often called a 3-way
switch circuit. A hall light for example can be activated or deactivated
from either of two switched. A switch at either end of the hallway, thus
you never need traverse the hallway in darkness. Poor nomeclature if you
ask me. Both switches are SPDT, and the circuit has 4 states of switch
position and two states for the light operation...how the hell it got named
a 3-way switch circuit has always perplexed me?
A DC motor circuit that pulls more than a few amps while running is best to
use switches rated for 2-4 times that current. Motor inrush current on
contact closing and inductive kick on contact opening can thrash the
switches and cause a short switch lifetime. If the motor current is tens
of amps use SPDT relays or contactors (similar to a starter solenoid) if the
DC current is really high.
If you want a solid-state solution...read-up on MOSFET H-Bridge circuits for
DC motor control.
