Yes, I care, I believe it's an legislator's wet dream and resembles an
overweight sledgehammer to crack a nut. Started by non-thinkers, then
driven by marketers who can see a buck in it.
It's the same sort of BS we get with "total alcohol bans" at
functions, etc. As a generally law-abiding 50+ boring old fart who
has very little inkling to get drunk, sometimes I'd like a can of
beer, but no, the politicians, leglislators, petty town nazis, and the
cops have decreed that would be grounds for arrest. Sems like they
just want to keep us under control, and if we don't break enough laws,
then damm, they will just make up some new more draconian ones to
increase the hit rate, and hence ensure their own job security.
I've a better idea: Target and punish the real offenders, for
instance, I'd see something like the following scale of punishment as
appropriate for causing death while DUI:
1st offence. 6 months of weekend work in the hospital cleaning up the
blood and muck from auto accidents. Loss of licence for 6 months with
no exceptions, tough luck. All the victim's costs to be met by the DUI
driver. If they don't have enough assetts to cover the costs, the
hospital work time is extended as required.
2 nd offence As above, but multiplied by a factor of 4 or 5.
3rd offence. A long imprisonment term, maybe 10-15 years, plus a
lifetime ban on driving.
4th Offence, has to be tough this time, I think I'm in favour of the
Chinese style executions with the body organs going to road accident
I have seen a case in the papers recently, where a DUI caused the
death of 4 innocent folk, and it turned out he had 30+ previous
convictions. A slow learner who does not want to be part of society. I
also have to ask, what were the previous 30 judges thinking of when
sentencing? Their pensions?
