|Do you remember, I was thinking of popping in on them when I was
|down the first time, but didn't have time (and C. wasn't all that
|My impression is that they are a bit sturdier than Sherline
|and a bit cheaper, but a bit cruder and fewer accessories. I've seen
|Sherline's plant in Vista CA, and it's pretty impressive. The
|bossman Joe Martin used to race cars.
|These guys also sell the headstocks and other parts at fairly
|reasonable prices compared to the industrial dealers- try to
|get a spindle with precision preloaded bearings for the price
|they sell it for..
|Both lathes can be shoved into a small storage space when
|you don't need them, and lifted with one hand, which is about
|the only advantage over an old Southbend or something similar
|which takes up a good part of a garage or basement shop. One
|of their main competitors these days is a Chinese made
|90-lb iron lathe that costs less and does more, but is pretty
|low grade from fit and finish to their frequently failing
|DC motor speed control.
I have a new technique on my limited-space workbench. Everything is
stashed underneath. Whenever I need a drill press or a grinder, etc.,
I just haul it out and put on the bench and hold it in place with a
big-ass C-clamp ;-)
