You forgot to mention the 2N390X series . . .
If memory serves, the 2N440X are spec'd for higher gain at low
collector currents than the 2N2222. I also recall a thread that
claimed the 2N440X series tended to be quieter due to their geometry.
I see the 2N5086/7/8/9 series used often in low-level audio stages:
the parts are very high gain and low noise, but can't take a very high
The MPS8098/MPS8598 (or MPS8099/MPS8599) are rather popular in
line-level through pre-driver stages: similar gain to 2N2222 or
2N440X, perhaps a little faster, and rated for collector supplies up
to 60 volt (or 80 volt).
