I'll give him full marks for ferocity, but he isn't great on specifics
- an arm or a leg would be about his level of targeting.
I wonder where he got his revelation about the masking threshold being
precisely 85dB - his criterion for objectivity must mean that it came
from some audio amateur, rather than the guys who are set up to do the
measurements, whom I found remarkably hard to nail down.
When Brian Moore did stick his neck out - IIRR in a letter to HiFi
News and Record Review aroind 1990 - Bob Stuart promptly muddied the
waters. I never got to the talk that Bob Stuart gave at the Applied
Psychology Unit in Cambridge, but Brian did, and when I asked him
about it, about six months later, Brian winced a bit and said that if
you did reproduce your music good and loud you could hear distortion
products at the level Bob had claimed.
It was a nice little academic controversy, with the engineer coming
out ahead - for once - but I'm damned if I can work out how to
document it. I've long since binned my 1990's copies of HiFi News and
