There is apparently an arrangement of multiple magnets which will bias
the resulting total field farther off to one side of the array. I
remember this being discussed in connection with maglev trains, but I
can't find the Web page at the moment. It looked something like this:
[ N ][ ][ S ][ ][ N ]
[ ][N S][ ][S N][ ]
[ S ][ ][ N ][ ][ S ]
but with a specific order and pattern of reversals. The flux graph
showed a stronger flux on one side than the other. I'm not sure how
you would adapt this to a 2D array, but it's something to think about.
Maybe you'd have multiple rods with short connecting pieces or
something. Sorry I can't find the direct URL. :(
