While on a mission in Vietnam on Sept. 11, 1965, John Louis Larsen
took an enemy's bullet to the left arm as a grenade exploded into his
legs.
The young U.S. Marine survived, but his childhood dream of becoming an
FBI agent seemed in doubt. He lost hearing in his left ear and doctors
described him as 60 percent disabled, Larsen recalled.
But those who know Larsen say he never gives up.
After Vietnam, Larsen went to college and then for nearly 10 years
taught mentally handicapped and emotionally disturbed children in his
hometown of St. Paul, Minn. All the while, he continued to rehab his
broken body.
