The first thing that leaps to mind is that he was pandering to his base. The
second (and, given that it is from the BBC, not unlikely) is that the
snippet poorly represents what he was saying. I'm interested in reading the
sentences before and after this one (I couldn't find them, though).
As far as your comment that evolution has been proven true, there are still
plenty of areas that are still in the theory stage, enough that I think you
can say that it is still mostly a mystery. Without knowing what else he
said, I don't think you can convict him of gross ignorance.
