Israeli Army Mobilizes Camels

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) The Israeli military is reaching back into history to
equip its anti-smuggling patrols on the Israel-Egypt border -- it's giving
Camels can go where jeeps, trucks and even tanks can't, the military
So it rented camels from a firm that usually hires them out to tourists for
jaunts around Israel's southern port of Eilat, the soldiers' weekly
Bamahaneh magazine reported in its current issue.
The long, peaceful Israel-Egypt border between the Sinai and Negev deserts
is not fortified, and smugglers have taken advantage, moving prostitutes,
drugs and weapons into Israel.
Up to now, Israeli soldiers have chased them on foot through the sand,
sometimes catching the smugglers but often losing them.
Therefore "we have decided to take advantage of the oldest transport vehicle
in the world," Col. Pini Ganon, commander of the scouting unit in the border
area, told the weekly.
