FBI Agents Storm Bail Bonds Offices
(EXCERPT) FBI (news - web sites) agents continued poring Thursday over
thousands of seized documents related to a growing probe of possible
corruption in the Jefferson Parish court system.
The FBI kicked its investigation of alleged corruption at the
Jefferson Parish courthouse into high gear Wednesday, launching a
noon-time raid on offices right across the street from the courthouse.
Shortly after lunch Wednesday, Derbigny Street was sealed off by
Gretna Police as armed FBI agents flooded the offices of Bail Bonds
"We've been authorized by federal courts to serve search warrants on
these locations that we're at today and we're not going to make any
further comment beyond that," Assistant Agent in Charge Charles
Cunningham said. "We're conducting a search for documents and other
evidence to be gathered in this investigation."
Last week, a dozen agents showed up at Bail Bonds Unlimited to
interview a handful of employees.
Sources told WDSU-TV that the agents played taped phone conversations
for at least one employee. In the taped conversation, campaign
contributions allegedly were discussed with a judge. The agents then
played another taped phone conversation about the practice of
The tapes and interviews put Bail Bonds Unlimited and its owner, Louis
Marcotte, on the alert that the company's phones and the phones of
others have been tapped for months, sources told WDSU-TV.
While agents on Derbigny Street searched Marcotte's office on
Wednesday, others searched his home in Timberlane.
The bail bond investigation is part of an investigation involving
Judge Ronald Bodenheimer, who was arrested two weeks ago on drug
charges. Bodenheimer allegedly conspired to plant drugs on a federal
witness who was causing him problems at his Venetian Isles marina.
Marcotte's company virtually controls the bail bond business in
Jefferson Parish. Sources told WDSU-TV that Marcotte and others in his
company are targets in the federal investigation.
Agents believe that campaign contributions to judges by Marcotte's
complany are a quid pro quo for help with setting bonds.
The FBI finished their search of the offices Wednesday evening,
loading thousands of documents from Marcotte's office into waiting
trucks. All of the material will go to a federal grand jury that is
hearing evidence into allegations of corruption, perhaps widespread
corruption, at the Jefferson Parish courthouse.
The federal grand jury was expected to hear more testimony in the
expanding investigation on Thursday.
