FBI Official to Head Catholic Child Protection
(EXCERPT) Thu Nov 7, 2:05 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI (news - web sites)'s highest-ranking
woman, Kathleen McChesney, is leaving the agency to head the U.S.
Roman Catholic church's new Office of Child and Youth Protection, an
FBI spokesman said on Thursday.
The office is part of a new policy of the U.S. Conference of Catholic
Bishops aimed at removing sexual predators from the pulpits of
Catholic churches across the United States.
As the FBI's Executive Assistant Director for Law Enforcement,
McChesney had responsibility for the bureau's laboratory and training
as well as the Critical Incident Response Group, which included
hostage rescue teams and FBI profilers.
In her new job, McChesney will be helping local Catholic dioceses to
put into practice the church's Charter for the Protection of Children
and Young People, which was framed by American Catholic bishops in
June, as part of an effort to rebuild confidence in a church rocked by
a sex abuse scandal.
