From: urlbuilder@hotmail.com (Al B. Premise#1:The strongest DN extension is .com because it was first in line, has an "established" aura, is what the general public identifies w/ and is the extension that most people punch in when doing a quick search from the address bar. The ideal name is short, descriptive, identifiable, and catchy and ends w/ .com. Premise #2:The DN market is being deluged (diluted?) w/ new extensions creating a host of new DN address possibilities. Internet users will gain awareness of these new extensions (e.g. .net than and now) and will use them as needed. • -.com remains king, but address extensions become less of a factor in name value. • -The names quality (short, descriptive, identifiable, catchy) will be the major determining factor of it's value. • _Quality names w/ non-.com extensions will have value, but not at .com levels. • Connecting the name and extension thematically increases strength. For example, connecting .us w/ political, historic, or patriotic themes. NEXTPRESIDENT.US, SPIRITOF76.US, or ROUTE66.US, to my way of thinking, are the next best thing to .com and have the potential of being stronger as more extensions enter the market. • Same applies to .ws except here it's through playing on the "website" ending. Come to THE PARTY WEBSITE! THEPARTY.WS THEANSWER.WS etc • Distinctions can be made regarding DN usefulness as it relates to the purpose and needs of a site. Not all sites have the express need of being on top of the search engine list. A company may place a higher value on the recognition, identification or descriptive values of their name in which case an alternate ext. or the use of dashes wouldn't impede and perhaps would enhance their identity if the ext was thematically linked to their product. Example: a local drugstore chain wants to offer customers an on-line Rx service uses 24HOUR-PHARMACY.com. The site is promoted through the companies stores and is not reliant upon how it comes up in a search. A strong, descriptive name w/ a dash has more strength for me than NAME24HOURPHARMACY.com • Dashes can work where apostrophes are normally used. ie BUCKET O' CHICKEN = BUCKET-O-CHICKEN, or to shorten up an "and" STOPANDSHOP = STOP-N-SHOP. Anyways just wanted to throw these ideas out there to see what the thinking might be. --.us, .ws, and Word-Word.com are not necessarily all that bad, particularly when looking ahead a couple of years. As internet users, use more alternate exts. and other DN variations a good quality name w/ a.ws at the end, may not be so bad, after all.
